WHAT CAUSES A BOWING WALL?

There are a number of factors that can contribute to a bowing basement wall, not every project can be approached in the same way. Trust our team of experts to assess your needs and determine the best path forward to protect your black hills home.

Expansive Soils

Expansive soil is a common culprit behind bowing walls in basements and foundations. This type of soil absorbs water and expands, exerting immense lateral pressure on foundation walls. During periods of heavy rain or improper drainage, the swelling soil pushes against the walls, causing them to bow, crack, or even fail over time. Without proper mitigation, the repeated cycles of swelling and shrinking can lead to serious structural damage.

Frozen Ground

When the ground around a foundation freezes, it expands due to the increased volume of ice compared to water. This phenomenon, known as frost heave, exerts tremendous lateral pressure on basement walls. Over time, repeated freeze-thaw cycles can cause walls to crack, bow inward, or even collapse in severe cases.

Frost heave can cause bowing walls in South Dakota.

Even something as simple as parking heavy machinery near your home can have lasting effects on the structure of your basement. When these objects compact the soil around your foundation it can cause unnecessary pressure to build and push against your walls.
